She whispers: “Jimeno.” She runs toward the river. 8. Hospital Vigil – Jimeno’s Fate Juan pulls Jimeno from the river, unconscious and bleeding. They rush him to a clinic. The doctor says: “The bullet is lodged near his spine. He may never walk again.” Ruth arrives, weeping. She holds Jimeno’s hand. Oscar and Libia (Juan’s other sister-in-law) stand watch.

Then Norma changes tone: “But you want to know the real truth? I did it all because you rejected me. You chose Sarita, that weak, naive girl. So now I’ll take everything from you.” She pulls the revolver from her coat. Juan stands still. “You won’t shoot,” he says. Norma aims at Juan. Her hand shakes. Suddenly, a second gunshot rings out — but not from Norma’s gun. Leandro steps out from behind a rock, holding a smoking pistol. He shot Jimeno , who had followed Juan to protect him.
