Naniwa is one of Osaka’s original city wards, and its name actually dates back to before Osaka existed—it was once the ancient capital’s port. Today, it’s a fascinating mix of retro shopping streets, family-owned sake breweries, and some of the best kushikatsu you’ll ever eat.

Order the nikutama (beef skewer with egg), the aspara (asparagus wrapped in pork), and the cheese chikuwa . Wash it down with a highball . Your jacket will smell like fried food for the rest of the day. That’s a good thing. Walk off the grease at the Naniwa Museum of History (a small, underrated gem).
