Perhaps the most astonishing chapter of his life was his relationship with Kanchipurna, a low-caste temple servant, and Tirukkoshtiyur Nambi, his own guru. Ramanuja, a high-born Brahmin, would humbly serve and learn from these men. On one occasion, to receive the most secret of the mantras, he made 18 arduous trips to his guru’s village. When he finally received it, his guru warned him of a terrible curse: if he revealed it to the unworthy, he would go to hell. Without a moment’s hesitation, Ramanuja turned around, climbed the temple tower, and broadcast the mantra to the entire town.
