Often hailed as the Indian counterpart to the Hollywood classic Die Hard (owing to a similar siege structure), Kuruthipunal was a film far ahead of its time. It was also India's official entry for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1996. The film stars Kamal Haasan as Adhi Narayanan , an upright IPS officer. Disgusted by the rising tide of terrorism and a corrupt bureaucratic system that protects criminals, Adhi devises a radical plan. He recruits his best friend, Major Subramaniam (played by Arjun Sarja ), to form a covert, off-the-books special task force.
