Episodes 4–7 (roughly) drag noticeably. While the writers juggle nine storylines, some get shortchanged. The siege of Winterfell by Theon’s 20 men feels laughably small-scale. His manipulation of Joffrey (gleefully humiliating the boy-king), his unlikely alliance with Bronn, and his desperate defense of King’s Landing during the Battle of the Blackwater are the season’s emotional and dramatic spine.
