Blu, a domesticated Spix's macaw, lives with his owner, Linda, in Minnesota. He spends his days lounging around the house, playing with his toys, and getting pampered by Linda.

Marcel explains that Blu's species is on the brink of extinction, and he needs Blu's help to save them. Blu is hesitant at first, but eventually agrees to help. Marcel introduces Blu to Jewel, a feisty and beautiful female blue macaw who is also a rare specimen.

The movie takes off as Blu and Jewel embark on a journey through the Amazon rainforest to find more blue macaws. Along the way, they encounter various obstacles, including poachers, birds of prey, and the Amazon River.

One day, Blu and Linda travel to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to meet Blu's long-lost father, Marcel. However, things take a turn when Blu discovers that he is actually a rare blue macaw, and his father is trying to help him mate with a female blue macaw named Jewel to save their species.
