The story follows an unnamed Narrator (Edward Norton), a recall specialist for a car company suffering from chronic insomnia. For a generation raised on advertising telling them to "buy this car to be happy," Tyler’s anti-consumerist rage felt like scripture. But Fincher and Palahniuk are too smart to let him off the hook. Tyler’s philosophy eventually curdles into fascism. The fight club evolves into "Project Mayhem"—a militaristic cult of identical, obedient men who want to destroy the credit card companies to reset society to zero. Tyler becomes the very father figure he claims to despise, demanding blind obedience and sacrifice.
The film ends with the Narrator literally shooting a hole through his own psyche (killing Tyler) and holding hands with Marla Singer (Helena Bonham Carter) as the financial buildings of the city explode around them. It is a strange, contradictory ending: a rejection of chaos, but a begrudging acceptance of destruction.
